IPCop is a free-standing 'distro', I am using it. I just burned the 
then-current ROM, booted my target box w/ the ROM in the CDROM reader & 
off it went installing. When it was done, I rebooted & it has been 
working flawlessly on my (admittedly simple) little network ever since. 
Go for it.
