[Leaplist] Haunted Hardware Again

Hi gang,

OS: Kubuntu Breezy (because later releases aren't compatible with the 
hardware), with all available updates

What works:
* Thunderbird email
* Firefox 2.0.0.3 (manually upgraded as Breezy is stuck in FF 1.5)
* most other stuff

What doesn't work:
* Links in Thunderbird won't open in Firefox (any more -- they did under 
FF 1.5)
* Links in Thunderbird and Firefox won't open OpenOffice
* OpenOffice.org2. At all. Won't even open. Tried deleting and 
reinstalling it via Adept, no change.

What I need:
Some idea of what to try next.

Note: I have already considered and rejected wiping the hard drives and 
reinstalling everything. Tried that already, and if I have to do that on 
a random basis, I may as well go back to Windoze.

Let's also hold off on suggestions to "get new hardware" or "hire an 
exorcist". I'll let y'all contribute to the design of my next machine, 
but I won't have time to do any parts swapping until late June.

I will not be able to attend the Installfests for May and June, so that 
option is out too.
