I think I might have found a band-aid for the problem.

What I had to do was change the primary user group that each user was  
a member of to the custom Our Users group, that way we could all work  
with the same files.  So now when I upload files the show up with the  
owner dmckenna:Our Users instead of dmckenna:None.  While it isn't  
perfect, it's good enough for now.
