5.6 Gigs should be more than enough for / - I usually give less than
that to production servers with terrabytes of storage!  But then again,
I split the system down more.  I like to have a separate /tmp and /var
(as mentioned by TheBS above) to protect against runaway processes.  

As a temporary fix you could symlink /tmp to a directory on another
partition.  I have done this from time to time to avoid having to take
a server off-line.
