Okay, it seems to be a transparent SMTP proxy c/o my hotel's free
Internet. It's literally delaying outgoing e-mail rather liberally --
sometimes up to 24 hours.

I finally got a flat out blocked e-mail from this transparent proxy
today. Now I know that's the culprit. I started playing with some
"SPAM-like" formatted e-mails and got other bounces.

The solution was to switch to a SMTP server on an alternative port.
I.e., Yahoo offers port 587 instead of 25. That solved it. Now my
outgoing e-mails are instantaneous again.
