I have to load < Mac OS 9.22 in order to flash the firmware on a
couple of my G3 imacs. I bought the OSX 10.3 upgrade, but you cannot
flash from even 10.1 (which runs fine on the G3 imacs). The system
cannot run this Apple-supplied utility from 'classic' mode.
You *have* to format the drive and load OS9 on it just to flash the firmware.
And ONLY then can I proceed to load OSX 10.3.
Does this sound nuts to anyone?
I ordered an OS9.22 disc set (but not likely to get before Christmas).
I wanted to give a couple of these iMacs away for Christmas, but not
with Ubuntu on it (which runs fine BTW). So I upped the RAM in them
and got OSX...only to find out that it won't run without a firmware
update.
Now I have dug and dug and cannot find a util that will let me flash
from Ubuntu that is running on that hardware.
I think that would be FAR easier, since that runs fine right off the
Ubuntu Live CD.
If someone knows of a better way to update the firmware...I am listening.
Otherwise I have to wait for OS9 discs to arrive (or if someone has
disc image I can use..it is what originally came on these G3 imacs.).
Anyone? Anyone? Patrick?
