Guys,
Really need some help - bottom-line question
-
"How can I get my window decorations back in SuSE 10.2?
(which
are the move, resize, close - options at the top of open
windows)
System: nVidia 7600GT with the following
installed
nvidia-gfx-kmp-default-1.0.9631_2.6.18.2_34-0.1
x11-video-nvidia-1.0.9631-0.1
AMD
Dual Core
cpu
History:
System running SuSE 10.1
with
Compiz/XGL - worked great. Experienced a kernel upgrade - which meant
that I had to compile a new nvidia driver to regain X (as per the nvidia
site). X came back...but without the cool features of Compiz - so started
changing settings (drawing from the original instructions on how to add
Xgl/Compiz to a SuSE system) - things really got messed up.
Knowing that 10.2 just came out - downloaded the ISO and did an
'Upgrade' from 10.1 to 10.2 - that seemed to work (meaning X started) -
but no Compiz as that's not part of the base system, yet. Saw that I
could add Repositories for the newer Beryl system - great! Installed the
rpm version of the nvidia driver - and Compiz & Beryl - setting the
system to start Beryl (instructions from their website). Beryl worked -
was customizing the sessions to see the whole 'floating 3d windows' - when
the whole screen went WHITE. I knew that X/Beryl were still running, as I
could 'rotate the cube' and could see the cube - except it was all white
(found some sites that described this
problem). Did some more
fiddling - finally uninstalling Beryl - that got me back to X - but no
Window Decorations - and all windows open at the (0,0) location - since
they can't be moved, it's really a pain.
Given that there's so
many ways to configure/start X (through .xinit - through sessions -
through startup scripts - through KDM/GDM - gnome-session-properties
- etc, etc) - where do I even start?
Given that afterwards I
did a full install (keeping my /home intact) - I'm getting the same
results (no window decorations) - SO, I'm guess it's gotta be a
configuration setting somethere in /home
I'm at the point of
getting a new hard-drive and 'starting clean' but that 'wreaks' of a
window 'fix it' method...grin
Thanks in advance - dave
