If what you're saying is that it's just a "USB dongle" or other type of
USB device, it could well work. Prime example is my Minolta 2400W
printer... it's USB only, and the support under Linux is dismal at best
(think "WinModem" but with a printer instead of a modem). I ended up
having to attach the printer to a USB 1.0 hub to knock down the transfer
rate, but I'm able to pass the USB device onto my W2K3 server VM, which
then shares the printer on the network.
There's more than one way to skin a cat :)
One 'gotcha' I still have is that the Linux host will take control of
the USB device before I can give it to the host... so I have to rmmod
the USB printer driver for it before I can pass it off to the VM. In
thinking about your situation, you might not have that as a problem if
Linux doesn't recognize the device... if it can't load a module for it,
that should leave it free to be used by any VM.
