We've had monthly installfests for as long as I've been going to LEAP 
stuff (~5 years), probably a lot longer.  They are almost always well 
attended by a good core group, and a fair amount of newcomers as well. 
While I haven't counted attendence, we often fill up the space we have 
setup for these things.

We do *not* need to do anything special to "go above and beyond to cater 
to people who would not otherwise want to show up", lest we run out of 
space, seriously piss off those who really just want to get some project 
done without constant pestering (there are only so many people to go 
around who are interested in providing newbie help), and have the event 
become unmanagable in scope.
